Mineral rich state of India, Odisha has a greater role in India's economic development in most sectors like power, steel, construction etc. India's mining sector contributes approximately 2% to India's GDP and provides essential raw materials to various industries. Odisha has the country's sole resources of Ruby. It accounts for the country's 96% chromite, 93% nickel ore, 68% PGM metal, 69% cobalt ore, 25 %, 41% bauxite, 34% manganese, 39% iron ore (haematite), 24% sillimanite, 20% vanadium ore, 37% zircon, 17% garnet, 15% titanium, 9% graphite and 6% REE. In total, 22 major minerals and 36 minor minerals are produced in the State. With only about 0.68% of Odisha's geographical area is under mining, the State plays a dominant role in India's mining industry. Odisha is home to 243 operating mines,and over 48% of total mining leases of the country. Mining alone contributed 3.4% to the State's GDP. Odisha occupies an important position in India, having 16.92% of the total reserves of the country.

The Indian Mining & Engineering Journal published every month since 1961 had made signicant presence in Indian mining sector for dissemination of knowledge amongst all the stakeholders.
Since last 10 years it had instituted the Annual Awards, to felicitate the distinguished personalities who have contributed for the growth of the coal and mineral sector. Young scientists are also
felicitated on the occasion to make them ready to face the challenges in the years ahead.
AKS University, Satna(MP) is imparting state-of-theart education in engineering, agriculture, life sciences, IT, MBA, Social Sciences in addition to conducting Research and Industrial consultancy. Its Mining Engineering department in less than seven years time had emerged as a prominent mining education department imparting Diploma, B.Tech, M.Tech and Ph.D programs. It had also taken up several consultancy and research programs.
